Designed by Architects44, extensive use of timber and intricate well thought out detailing permeates through the project creating a rich material and textural palette that is both functional and stunning.

Gisborne Port primarily exports radiata pine logs, so it was important that this was referenced in the new work to their offices. Eastland Port company also had a strong connection to Abodo, due to their locally manufactured kiln dried radiata pine, and strong sustainability ethos.

Architects44 commented “By integrating extensive use of timber into the project we were able to create warm and natural environments in which to work, whilst at the same time promoting the client’s business and business agendas.”

The main façade of the Eastland Port offices faces directly north and is exposed to the strong Gisborne sunshine and weather each day. So a material that could withstand the conditions was essential for the exterior applications.

Builders DStevens worked alongside Architects44 to complete the office transformation - choosing Abodo’s Vulcan Screening to provide shading to the interior and conceal the existing building, alongside Vulcan Decking for the entrance.

The DStevens team said “Vulcan timber is a quality product that has stayed exceptionally straight with minimal fixings over large spans. The homogenous look and feel of the product is nice to work with and looks great once installed.

Vulcan is an incredibly lightweight and stable timber with a nice grain (no knots!). We enjoyed working with Vulcan on site because it is easy to cut and install without the need to pre-drill.

We are really proud of the final building. The addition of Abodo Vulcan Screening to the façade of Eastland Port has transformed a 1920s office building into a beautiful, modern workplace”.

The project has also far exceeded the client’s expectation in terms of quality of design, spaces, detailing and finish.
