Jamie Falla, Studio Otto / In Search of a New Vernacular
As part of their collaborative search for an architecture of place that touches our soul and connects us to our past, Jamie will discuss how, through observation, history, and discovery, his studio is fascinated by developing a new language that abstracts traditional forms for a sustainable future, through four anecdotes and ten projects.

Speaker Bio: Jamie Falla, Studio Otto
Jamie Falla's journey in architecture began with hands-on work, designing and making a table for his mum. He studied at Kingston University and the AA in London, and during his year out he held an exhibition, 'Exploring the 'Origin, and travelled to the Amazon and later Australia, learning from Indigenous people, Glenn Murcutt, and other elders. Having worked with notable mentor Paxton Locher in London, he founded MOOArc in 1994. He returned to his native home of Guernsey in 2000 to work on a number of award-winning innovation projects. His experiences emphasise the importance of discovery through observation, hand drawings centered around a collaborative approach, and crafting sustainable and vernacular architecture.
Ged Finch, XFrame / Construction Waste and Circularity
What is a circular economy, and how can we reuse or minimise construction waste? Daniel Gudsell, Abodo's Managing Director, and then PhD student Ged Finch discuss the role of circular economy in construction.
Ged explains the concept of functional value and abundance, along with the use of buildings as "material banks" for the future. Ged outlines a future where construction materials manufacturers collaborate to create standardised systems, and the embodied energy of the materials used is transparent.
