Known as the Welcome Pavilions, the structures use a raft of sustainable materials including Abodo Vulcan® Cladding in Protector - Patina, reflecting the museum’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Spanning 500 acres of rolling fields and forested hills, Storm King Art Center is home to over 120 outdoor sculptures. Since its founding in 1960, the museum has not only focused on sharing these artworks with visitors but has also taken ownership of the ecology of the property, with many of the works designed to merge with the surrounding landscape.

Designed by WXY Architecture and Heneghan Peng Architects, the Pavilions encompass a new ticketing center, restrooms and gathering spaces, all within a minimised footprint.

The project also includes the return of a former adjacent carpark into landscaped parkland with over 600 new trees, making Vulcan Cladding an apt choice to help the buildings merge with this natural palette.

In a recent Dezeen article, WXY principal Claire Weisz spoke of the Studio’s vision for the buildings: "We began by considering the entry experience, reinterpreting what was already there by removing extra roads, adding three new pavilions to frame the existing stone house, and reimagining the shutters, porches, and outdoor sink that form the first view of the Art Center," she said. "The choice to use native stone and modified fast-growth wood at the visitor entrance reflects the site – its land, art, and environmental legacy."

Abodo Vulcan Cladding is a thermally modified timber product chosen for its stability through seasonal changes, with the Patina finish set to silver off to a subtle grey tone that is in keeping with the original stone building. As the first major renovation to the Storm King Art Center in 65 years, much care has been taken to future proof the building, with passive cooling, rooftop solar arrays, and a grey water system all included in the build.

With art and nature adding colour and vibrancy, these new buildings sit back within the landscaped grounds with both subtlety and reverence.
