The stunning new MPavilion was officially opened in October – the fifth in the ongoing series of temporary structures in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, this time designed by Barcelona-based architect Carme Pinós of Estudio Carme Pinós.

Carme is celebrated internationally for her interests in urban liveability and inclusivity, as well as experimentation and poetic, experiential design.

She had a strong vision for the pavilion, based on its location amongst nature, how it would be a place of activity and connection, and its backdrop against the Melbourne skyline.

The same material, Vulcan Screening, was used for the roof and the walls, blending at deceptively clever angles to make the legs and roof. Vulcan Screening is made from sustainably sourced, Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certified eco-timber and is a fitting choice for a structure that celebrates nature, people, and beauty for a lifetime.

The light weight Vulcan Screening has the dimensional stability to cope with notoriously hot Victorian summers. The pavilion, so beautifully and thoughtfully designed, gives the people of Melbourne a place to come together for a wide variety of activities.

In the words of Carme Pinós – it’s a place that is very sensitive to the changes in nature, where people can observe the rain, see the change of light and movement of shadows, and opens up to the garden and the view. Each moment in the pavilion will be different.

Abodo supplied Vulcan Screening to the project in collaboration with Australian distributor - Britton Timbers.
